Why LSUS’ chemistry degree program?
LSUS chemistry professors are major contributors to impactful research. They’ll invite you to work side-by-side with them on research, help you make connections with industry professionals, and prepare you to further your education or pursue a career in industry. As a chemistry major at LSUS, you’ll also get hands-on training and experience in a variety of technologies and on instrumentation, including computer-based molecular modeling, microwave chemical synthesizers, gas chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and high performance liquid chromatography.
Experiential learning to prepare for real-world careers
The chemistry major at LSUS is filled with opportunities for research and discovery as early as your first year. Chemistry majors have synthesized anti-cancer compounds and developed nanophotonic sensors alongside nationally-recognized faculty. The LSUS Collaboratory also provides a hands-on research space for students pursuing degrees in chemistry, natural and physical sciences, computer science, and digital arts.
As a chemistry major at LSUS, you’ll be introduced to leading-edge technologies and unique opportunities in research and networking.
Exclusive experience
LSUS has a strong connection with the LSU Health Sciences Centers in Shreveport and New Orleans, and the Red River Agricultural Research Station. From research to additional courses, these collaborations will be beneficial as you transition into your career, regardless of industry. The research we engage in is marked by its breadth — from atomic to polymer and macromolecular, cancer drugs to cancer cell-signaling, and nanotechnology to sensors and renewable energy.
Student Life
Student clubs and organizations are great opportunities for you to build your résumé and make connections. LSUS chemistry majors often join the Biomedical Informatics Group and Chemistry Club. Another focus is scientific clubs and outreach programs, giving students the chance to convey their excitement about science to the surrounding community. Our department recognizes that science is carried out in a societal context, and we value diversity, equity, and inclusion among our faculty and students.
Financial Aid for Biology Majors
Over $12.4 million in scholarship money is given to students at LSUS every year. As a chemistry major at LSUS, you could also qualify for the Gary K. Brashier Memorial Chemistry Endowed Scholarship.
Students in the ACS-certified concentration will take courses in all of the major areas of chemistry: organic, analytical, physical, inorganic, biological, and polymer chemistry. Laboratory research under mentorship and tutelage of a chemistry professor is also required. Employers generally find that graduates possessing the ACS-certified chemistry degree are better prepared for employment, and graduate schools look more favorably upon applicants with this degree credential.
Students in the biochemical science concentration gain broad exposure to a blend of chemistry and biology. This prepares them for admission into graduate school, medical school, and health science professional schools, including pharmacy, cardiopulmonary science, medical technology, nursing, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Students also feel prepared and enabled to pursue full-time research positions at biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, or careers in education or sales.
A chemistry degree from LSUS will prepare you to take the next step in your career – whether that’s medical school, graduate school or a full-time position. LSUS graduates can go on to work as:
