Adult Psychiatry Residency Program

The residency training program in psychiatry at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ÖÆƬ³§ provides excellent broad based training in the diagnosis, prevention, study and treatment of mental disorders. We prepare our graduates to deliver high-quality psychiatric care using all the modalities available to the modern psychiatrist. These include a variety of psychotherapies, medications and both established and newly emerging brain stimulation therapies.

Through teaching time-honored principles of patient care, as well as evidence-based medicine practices, we prepare our residents to use both the treatments of today and tomorrow.

Thank you for your interest in Saint Louis University School of Medicine’s adult psychiatry program. We are a mid-size psychiatry department where residents, fellows, faculty, and staff all work together in a close knit community to provide exceptional mental health care for all individuals.

We have a unique setting, being a Jesuit institution located in a metropolitan environment. Our wide catchment area and patients’ significant psychopathology provide our trainees a comprehensive clinical experience. There is no clinical situation that you will not see and get comfortable treating here at SLU.

I want to highlight a few of SLU’s missions that we strive to practice daily as a department and program.

In support of its mission, the University:

  • Fosters programs that link University resources to local, national and international communities in collaborative efforts to alleviate ignorance, poverty, injustice and hunger; extend compassionate care to the ill and needy; and maintain and improve the quality of life for all persons.
  • Welcomes students, faculty and staff from all racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds and beliefs and creates a sense of community that facilitates their development as men and women for others.’

Individuals who work at SLU quickly learn that the mission is more than words on a website, but are actually discussed and practiced on a routine basis.

Our residency program allows each resident to pursue his/her individual professional goals while gaining expertise in the general adult psychiatry residency training goals and objectives set by the ACGME. We see each resident as a prospective outstanding psychiatrist with the ability to pursue his/her specific interests in research, teaching, specialty training, etc.

Our program goal is to help each individual develop his/her skills as an excellent clinical psychiatrist, which includes equal comfort with interviewing, biopsychosocial formulation, diagnosis and treatment planning. Our trainees have extensive training in all modalities of mental health treatment, including extensive training in psychotherapy, psychopharmacology and neuromodulation techniques.

Our program acknowledges the importance of various evidence based psychotherapies in conjunction with psychopharmacology and neuromodulation for the complete treatment of our patients. We offer extensive didactic training in all treatment modalities, as well as hands on training in each modality.

Similarly, the expertise of subspecialty faculty (including forensic psychiatrists, geriatric psychiatrists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, and addiction psychiatrists) enhance the daily experience of our residents and allow for unique mentorship opportunities and specialty experiences.

We are excited to initiate another successful recruitment season and look forward to ‘meet’ you all virtually this year!

Warmest regards,
