Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Family and Community Medicine

Our faculty, staff and residents invite you to explore our diverse activities in patient care, education, research and community engagement.

Our faculty and residents care for patients across the St. Louis region, with faculty practices at SLUCare Family Medicine at the new Center for Specialized Medicine, the Tower in Richmond Heights, and at the Des Peres Medical Arts Pavilion, and residency practices at Federally Qualified Health Centers in St. Louis and Illinois.

The Department of Family and Community Medicine educates future physicians with an emphasis on community.  Medical students participate in our highly rated clerkship, and the longitudinal Distinction in Urban Community Health sponsored by Family Medicine. We train the next generation of family physicians at the SLU Family Medicine Residency in St. Louis and the SLU Family Medicine Residency of Southwest Illinois. We integrate community-focused primary care with behavioral health, as our medical family therapy program trains graduate students.

The SLU Family Medicine Division of Research focuses on the intersections of behavioral health, addiction, and social determinants of health, and ranks in the top 20 family medicine departments nationwide in research.

We are immersed in our St. Louis city and region, with an emphasis on underserved care in residency training, community-based participatory research, primary care at the St. Louis County health centers and the County Corrections Center, and Area Health Education Center health care workforce pipeline activities. Our Center for Substance Use Disorder and Pain Management provides clinical services, research, and training including an Addiction fellowship.

We hope that you will visit us.
